Drew says of the inspiration behind this painting: "Native American masks were created for various rituals and shamanic activities. Native Americans believed that the person wearing the mask was taken over by the spirit that mask represents, and that the mask does not disguise, but reveals true inner characteristics of its wearer.
Wearing a mask affects the wearer, even as the mask is affected by the wearer. To put on a mask is not to impersonate: it is to become the being the mask both represents and is – and thereby to manifest part of one’s self. Maybe this is why the Mexican wrestlers were inspired by the Native American's masks and formed their own mask making rituals.
A good friend of mine from Puerto Escondido Mexico, Angel Salinas, surfs wearing a mask. It transforms him from his daily persona to that of a big wave warrior.
The surfing shaman in the painting is experiencing that part of himself that is revealed when he's in the water and in sync with the rhythm of the ocean.
Artist Rick Griffin, one of my great inspirations, painted masks on some his characters. He, too, was fascinated by the culture and history of Native Americans."
Your painting will be packaged with love and shipped via U.S. Priority Mail.
